About Gurulandia

Mission, vision, and the people behind this project

Mission

Gurulandia.org educates the public about the psychology of guru influence and the mechanisms of manipulation, scam, and cult formation. We provide accessible educational material, practical tools for critical evaluation, and a clear directory of agencies and organisations where people can find real help.

The subject is serious. The subject is also, at times, genuinely absurd — and we do not pretend otherwise. The naturalist who catalogues a species does not need to be angry at the species. They need to describe it accurately, so that others can recognise it. That is what this site attempts to do.

Vision

A world in which the manipulation of human credulity is widely understood, clearly named, and effectively countered — not through cynicism, but through the kind of informed, affectionate scepticism that the best naturalists have always brought to their subjects.

The hunger that the guru exploits is real. The longing for meaning, community, transformation, and guidance is not a weakness — it is a feature of human life. Gurulandia.org does not mock that hunger. It tries to protect it from those who would exploit it.

What We Are Not

Gurulandia.org is not a crusade. It does not argue that all spiritual practice is fraudulent, that all self-improvement is a scam, or that all coaches and guides are predators. Many practitioners in these fields are sincere, skilled, and genuinely helpful. The distinction this site draws is not between the spiritual and the secular, or between the traditional and the alternative, but between the accountable and the unaccountable — between practitioners who can be evaluated, questioned, and held responsible for their claims, and those who cannot.

The Bestiary is not a list of bad people. It is a catalogue of recognisable types — patterns of behaviour and method that have persisted, in one form or another, for as long as there have been teachers willing to offer transformation and students willing to pay for it.

The Founder

Daniel Daroca is the author of The Wisdom of Negative Thinking, From Competence to Cluelessness, and Gurulandia: A Bestiary — The Survival Guide to Gurus. His work examines the intersection of psychology, culture, and the persistent human desire to be told that transformation is available at a price.

Gurulandia.org grew directly from the research behind these books — specifically from the observation that the mechanisms of guru influence are not mysterious, not confined to any particular tradition or ideology, and not limited to the obviously credulous. They are patterns. And patterns, once named, can be recognised.

The nonprofit is in the process of formal registration. A Board of Directors will be announced in due course.
